If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, chances are you were exposed to asbestos earlier in your life. Whether you worked in manufacturing or mining, or if you simply came in contact through materials used to renovate your home, asbestos exposure can affect your health many years down the line. Many companies were aware of the hazards of asbestos long before government regulations were implemented. If you were exposed to asbestos by a party that knew of its dangers, you deserve compensation.

The poor prognosis and high cost of treatment for mesothelioma makes legal representation important for some patients. Often, compensation is necessary to cover the various treatments needed for this deadly disease and to help the victim’s family after death. Higher awards generally go to victims and families represented by experienced counsel. Beyond help with medical bills, there is also the issue of justice.

If you were knowingly exposed to asbestos by an employer or some other organization, a successful lawsuit will help guarantee that the offending party will avoid such dangerous behavior in the future. A law firm specializing in mesothelioma will have skilled investigators to prove wrongdoing and will use such information to make certain it does not happen to anyone else.

A recent French study on the links between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma gives evidence that people exposed to asbestos later in life have less chance of developing mesothelioma than individuals exposed at an earlier age.

The report was published by the European Respiratory Journal. The report could explain why some people exposed to asbestos develop the deadly disease and some do not.

The long-running study examined 2,466 males over a 20-year period, from 1987 to 2006. According to the results of the study, the risk of developing pleural mesothelioma was lower for individuals who were first exposed to asbestos after the age of 20. Intensity and duration of exposure were adjusted for in the study.

The effect of the duration of exposure decreased when the age of first exposure increased. The study concluded that the later the age a person is exposed to asbestos, the less effect the exposure may have.

The data for the study was collected by researchers from separate reports conducted by the French network of cancer registries and the French National Mesothelioma Surveillance Program.

The finding that earlier asbestos exposure could lead to higher incidences of mesothelioma is a powerful reason to ensure that children are never exposed to the deadly material.

State fire inspectors in Tennessee were surprised to discover that a school they thought closed the past decade due to serious fire code and asbestos violations has actually remained open and occupied by students.

A host of safety issues had led to the school’s supposed closure, including: emergency lighting, sprinkler systems, exit signs, the fire alarm system, use of kerosene heaters, corridors being used for storage and wiring and electrical issues. These have yet to be resolved ten years later.

Upon inspection, authorities discovered that one hallway is blocked off because of an asbestos abatement area, creating a dangerous 76-foot dead end.

Marion school officials acknowledged the safety concerns and moved the students out of the building. The board has says they will make a decision to either repair the building or move the students permanently.

Newspaper archives show the school board voted in 2004 to open Marion Academy in the building, so there have been students exposed to asbestos there for at least seven years.

No one is certain how the oversight occurred, but it is disturbing to think of all those children suffering from asbestos exposure.

Despite the fact that Canada has virtually banned asbestos use inside its borders, the country is moving forward with plans to reopen a Quebec mine to export asbestos to India. The opening of the Jeffery mine would triple the production of Canadian chrysotile, or white asbestos.

The opposition party in Canada, along with multiple international health experts, are condemning the country’s export of the deadly mineral. Ottawa University Professor Amir Attaran said, “It amounts to Canada being a purveyor of death around the world. Our country is an exporter of a deadly substance and we enjoy it – at least our federal government does.”

Abayyar Shankjar, the managing director of Hyderabad Industry, India’s largest asbestos cement manufacturer, denies that white asbestos causes cancer. This statement, in the face of so much contrary evidence, is “the most scientifically ridiculous nonsense”, according to Professor Attaran.

Denver area residents living near a trash-compactor landfill are worried about asbestos exposure now that the once disposal site for roofing and other asbestos-containing building materials is part of a proposed clean-up.

The site, which used to be a Titan I missile silo, was closed in the 1970’s to construction material drop off, but residents still leave rubbish there to be compacted and moved to another location.

Backhoe Services is a company that deconstructs missile silos. The county recently hired them to test the soil, but they instead began excavating. Residents say that Backhoe has been moving dirt on at least 5 acres, most of which probably contains contaminants.

The county officials are claiming that the asbestos at the site is not friable, meaning it is solid and cannot become airborne to harm nearby residents. Their plan is to remove all the solid pieces and cover over the area with dirt.

Residents are not comforted by these claims. They feel that no one is certain what was dropped off at the site over the years, and are concerned over the large scope of the project.

Have you developed mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure? Were you exposed through another’s negligence?

Our mesothelioma attorneys have years of experience helping mesothelioma victims get the compensation they deserve from those who exposed them to asbestos.

Authorities consider asbestos exposure to be the cause of the majority of mesothelioma cases throughout the world. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral used in a variety of industrial and commercial products, which U.S. authorities severely limited the use of in an attempt to prevent further cancer risks.

A recent study has shown that there is a new culprit in mesothelioma cancer, a mineral found in deposits throughout the world called erionite. What authorities have labeled as “cancer villages” best represent the danger presented by erionite. These villages, all in close proximity to deposits of erionite, have a 40-50 percent death rate from mesothelioma.

Testing done on mice has shown that erionite has a toxicity 500 times more carcinogenic than asbestos. Researchers concluded that erionite was “almost certainly the most toxic naturally occurring fibrous mineral known.”

With erionite deposits throughout the Western United States, action will need to be taken quickly to address the danger. The National Institutes of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Geological Survey are meeting next week to discuss erionite.

Erionite toxicity is a new and disturbing discovery. The toxicity of asbestos, on the other hand, was known for a long time before any regulations were put in place. Were you exposed to asbestos through your job and are considering legal action? Share your thoughts with others in your situation by commenting below.

As frustrating as the slow adoption of health regulations can be in the Unites States, there are cases where our regulations come long before other countries. Asbestos regulation is one area where we seem to have gotten a head start.

A new report from South Korea’s Ministry of Environment indicates that the number of people diagnosed with mesothelioma in that country should peak in 2045. In comparison, the number of cases in the Unites States is predicted to have already peaked, due to strict asbestos laws that went into effect in the 1980’s. South Korean asbestos regulations do not go into effect until this April.

Other modern countries that can expect many more years of coping with deadly mesothelioma cases include the Netherlands, which passed regulations in 1991, and Japan, which banned asbestos in 2005.

It is remarkably to see that a material determined to be highly toxic could continue to be used with impunity under the eyes of regulatory agencies purported to be concerned with public welfare. The sixty years it took in the United States to pass regulations seems a ridiculously long time, but it appears that we were ahead of some modern countries, even with the delay.

A new report from the World Health Organization is warning that mesothelioma deaths are on the rise. The WHO estimates that 92,252 people worldwide have died of mesothelioma from 1994 to 2008, with two-thirds of those deaths occurring since the year 2000.

Most of the reported deaths occurred in high income industrialized countries like the United States, The United Kingdom and countries in Western Europe. As expected, the countries with the highest cumulative mesothelioma deaths tended to be those who used the most asbestos.

As high as these numbers are, they do not include many of the countries that are still large users of asbestos. China, India, Thailand and Russia did not provide data to the WHO, leading researchers to state that the actual number of mesothelioma deaths is likely much higher.

The majority of reported deaths are from pleural mesothelioma, most often contracted by asbestos exposure. Peritoneal mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the abdomen, and pericardial mesothelioma, a cancer of the lining of the heart, were a distant second and third, respectively.

With mesothelioma deaths growing each year, we can only hope that the limitations placed on asbestos use will eventually lead to their decline.

Are you one of the ever increasing number of mesothelioma victims and considering legal action? Share your thoughts with others like you by commenting below.
