According to the Doctors Lounge, a new study has found that biomarkers may predict metastasis in people with melanoma. A set of plasma biomarkers may be useful in predicting which patients are at risk for metastasis, according to a study published in the Clinical Cancer Research.

Harriet M. Kluger, M.D. of the Yale Cancer Center in Connecticut and a team of researchers measured plasma proteins in 108 metastatic melanoma patients and 108 patients with resected stage I or II disease. The group studied protein levels in the former group.

The researchers found seven biomarkers, all which were higher in metastatic melanoma patients than in those with early-stage of the cancer. 81 percent of the early-stage patients had no marker elevation. In 69 percent of those with metastatic disease at least one marker had an elevation.

The team used blood tests to predict the risk of metastasis with melanoma, which would be a much cheaper method than periodic imaging tests used today. According to the Association for Cancer Research, 68,130 Americans were diagnosed with melanoma in 2010, and 8,700 died of the skin cancer. Most deaths from melanoma result from metastasis.

TV broadcaster Kerry Smith died this week from melanoma. She had worked at The Breeze radio station and presented on Radio Pacific and RadioLive, and formerly worked on MediaWorks. The Breeze FM presenter took medical leave in January, saying she wanted to focus on her treatment and recovery from skin cancer. Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and leading cause of death from skin disease.

According to Reuters, a new study is suggesting that a class of painkillers known as no steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could play a role in reducing the risk of melanoma. A large 2008 study failed to find any sufficient evidence to support this probability, but a smaller study found that taking these drugs, particularly aspirin at least once a week for more than 5 years, may have offered protection against the disease.

The co-author of the 2008 study, Dr. Maryam Asgari of Kaiser Permanente Northern California, said that the findings are interesting but should not turn people to taking painkillers in hopes of reducing their risk of skin cancer. NSAIDs, which include aspirin, Aleve and ibuprofen have side effects, the doctor reminds. Individuals with a family history of melanoma are also better off wearing sunscreen regularly and getting skin checks from a dermatologist, she further recommends.

Other research on NSAIDs found that people who take the drugs on a regular basis may be reducing their risk of getting bladder cancer, colorectal cancer and breast, esophagus and stomach cancers.

The researchers polled 400 people diagnosed with melanoma and 600 people without the disease to recall their use of the NSAIDs. They found that people without cancer had a longerh istory of taking NSAIDs than people who eventually developed melanoma, specifically more than 40 percent of people were cancer-free after taking NSAIDs at least once per week for more than 5 years.

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, killing almost 9,000 people in the U.S. last years, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Asbestos exposure is most often linked to shipyards, aluminum smelters, oil refineries and other industrial workplaces. But, because asbestos was often used to insulate homes, especially from the late 1950s through the 1970s, nearly anyone could have been exposed to this dangerous carcinogen,

For decades, from the early 1960s to 1990, the W.R. Grace Company manufactured a product called Zonolite. It was used in attics, crawlspaces, and rolled fiberglass insulation. When the material was new, it could usually be identified by a brownish–silver or golden color, with a glittery, granular appearance. After the material has aged, its puffy, nugget–shaped granules turn black or gray.

This particular type of insulation poses a substantial risk, as asbestos has been known to cause serious diseases such as mesothelioma and asbestosis. If asbestos insulation is suspected in your attic, tests should be performed by a licensed professional. Any disturbance to the material should be avoided, and all safety precautions should be taken to prevent asbestos fibers from releasing into the air.

It was widely used in the midwest but also in Texas.

In September, a bankruptcy court ruled that consumers can file claims against W.R. Grace for damages damages resulting from lowered property values, asbestos abatement fees, costs of removal, and economic loss caused by Zonlite. However, the deadline for filing a claim is Oct. 31.
