Scientists at the University of Hawaii discovered a potential treatment for mesothelioma that involves a virus found in birds. The fowlpox virus mainly affects turkeys and chickens, and scientists found a way to turn it against mesothelioma cancer.
Researchers “programmed” the virus to target survivin, a type of protein that cancer patients overproduce. They injected the altered virus into mice that had mesothelioma, and they found favorable results.
“Vaccination generated significant immune responses in both models, leading to delayed tumor growth and improved animal survival,” the researchers wrote in their report, which was published in the International Journal of Cancer.
The treatment succeeded by increasing the amount of T cells, which the body produces to fight cancerous threats. They could not find any unintended or negative side effects.
Scientists have yet to find a cure for mesothelioma in humans. There are forms of treatment that can reduce pain and extend life expectancy, but mesothelioma remains one of the most painful and fatal forms of cancer on the planet. Exposure to asbestos is the principle cause of mesothelioma.
