Mesothelioma treatment options are severely limited. By the time most patients receive the diagnosis, the disease is so widespread that doctors have few options to eradicate or treat malignant areas. One man, however, has defied expectations by surviving seven years after his diagnosis (most patients are given a one year life expectancy). Doctors credit his survival to a mix of non-invasive therapies.
A report published in the Journal of Medical Case Reports in December 2012 tells the story of a 61-year-old man who suffers from pleural mesothelioma. Due to his workplace conditions, he faced five years of prolonged asbestos exposure. Doctors discovered tumors consistent with pleural mesothelioma, the most commonly diagnosed type of mesothelioma.
The man refused invasive therapies like radiation and surgery, so his doctors opted for a mix of chemotherapy and hyperthermia. During hyperthermia, malignant areas receive concentrated blasts of high temperatures, sometimes up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit. Doctors administered three sessions of hyperthermia and one chemotherapy treatment. So far, it seems to be working.
“Our patient has subsequently survived without any evident disease for more than seven years,” the report says. The report credits eight doctors: Noriyuki Okonogi, Takeshi Ebara, Hitoshi Ishikawa, Daisaku Yoshida, Manabu Ueno, Toshitaka Maeno, Tatsuo Suga and Takashi Nakano.
