Student newspaper finds asbestos in classrooms

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

My Own Private Idaho

A high school newspaper in Muncie, Indiana found asbestos in several rooms and stirred a controversy by reporting that fact.

During its investigation, the newspaper collected samples form a science room and  form an art classroom and had them tested. Both samples tested positive for asbestos.

School officials have accused the students — and the newspaper’s advisor — of “unauthorized disturbance of encapsulated asbestos” and notified parents and teachers that the two classrooms will remain closed until they can be tested.

School officials note that the high school does contain asbestos products — as do many buildings built before 1979 — but they are safely “encapsulated” and would remain inert unless disturbed.

Press freedom experts contacted for a story that appeared in the Muncie daily newspaper, the Star Press, argue that the asbestos was found in ceiling tiles.

“… students touch those tiles all the time. They jump up and touch it. They throw pencils at it. They hang streamers from it during Spirit Week. So maybe it might not be a bad idea to tell students not to interact with the tile if the tile is all that stands between you and cancer. You might tell them that,” said Adam Goldstein, an attorney for the Student Press Law Center in Arlington, Va.

Asbestos exposure can lead to several forms of cancer and there is no safe level of exposure. The most pernicious disease attributed to asbestos exposure is mesothelioma, an aggressive form of cancer. Symptoms often take 20-30 years to develop and by the time they do, it is usually too late for effective treatment.

Exposure to nanotubes similar to asbestos

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted an experiment in which laboratory mice inhaled a specialized liquid that contained multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs).

The study was designed to show how much nanotube products interact with human bodies.  The results were stunning.  The mice contracted numerous pulmonary health symptoms including lung inflammation and fibrosis of the lungs.  It was also found that MWCNTs made their way into the lining of the lungs.  The NIOSH study is the first to prove that.

With this evidence, MWCNTs are being compared to asbestos fibers.  It is hypothesized that exposure to MWCNTs could one day lead to mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that results form asbestos exposure. It can take decades for smptoms to appear.

The findings were just from preliminary experiments, but more tests will be conducted.  As people are becoming more aware of the dangers of nanotube products, steps should be taken to ensure the safety of workers and manufacturers of the products.

The products are becoming more and more popular but should start decreasing soon thanks to the new data.

Positive finds in development of mesothelioma treatment

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009
.!.

Mesothelioma researchers have made a discovery that could help monitor the progression of a tumor and may even eliminate the tumor development completely.

The team of researcher studied the enzyme p21-activated kinase 2 (PAK2) which is a biological indicator of cancer growth.  The team discovered that the enzyme is activated in mesenchymal cells which are the connective tissues in the body, blood, and lymphatic vessels, and not in the epithelial cells as once believed.

The discovery also found that Erbin, a protein in the body, controls Merlin, a gene which suppresses tumors.  Researchers said they found that a protein called Erbin, in cooperation with the NF2 tumor suppressor Merlin, controls the outcome.

Tumors are formed when Merlin is absent from cells.  As long as there is Merlin in cells, the threat of cancer is greatly reduced.  Mutations in Merlin were found in 40 percent of the mesothelioma cases studied by a Swiss group.

Erbin and Merlin are closely related and together help prevent PAK2 activity which prevents tumor growth.  Without Erbin and Merlin, a growth factor protein known as beta (TGF-B) stimulates PAK2 growth.

The discovery is very important because it may allow future researchers to identify how tumor growth can be stopped and reduce mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is typically caused by asbestos exposure. People who work in refineries and smelters or on construction sites and at shipyards in the U.S. Navy are particularly at risk for asbestos exposure leading to asbestosis, lung cancer or mesothelioma.

Asbestos and toxic waste create new Nevada jobs

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

The Obama Administration has funded a major environmental cleanup program across the US. In fact, more than $6 billion in funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be given across 12 states to help cleanup the environment over the next few years.  The goal is to clean the environment while creating thousands of new jobs.

Lionheart psp Three Nevada test sites will get $44 million of that money.  It will be used to clean waste out of the soil at the sites.  Workers will also install groundwater monitoring wells which will provide more information about groundwater contamination.

The areas around the buildings are filled with toxic items that can cause cancer and serious diseases.  These include asbestos, lead, mercury, cadmium, oil, batteries, and light bulbs.

If the waste is disturbed, it could be released into the air.  Airborne asbestos exposure can cause several serious side effects including lung cancer or mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose and has a very long latency. Symptoms can take 20-30 years to appear and, by the time they do, it is often too late to save the victim. Most victims of mesothelioma die within 18 months of diagnosis.
