When the Federal government banned all new uses of asbestos in 1989, it did not require the removal of asbestos from existing buildings and other uses, nor did it require that industries stop using asbestos. It simply prohibited new uses.
There are a number of occupational sources of asbestos exposure. Less obvious are the para-occupational sources of secondary asbestos exposure.

A 1966 study showed that over 50 percent of women who developed mesothelioma were exposed to someone who worked with asbestos. A study by the American Journal of Industrial Medicine showed that wives and daughters were most vulnerable, with sons and other relatives less so, but still at risk.
In 2005, the American Journal of Industrial Medicine published the results of a study indicating family members of workers who were exposed to asbestos were most at risk for secondary exposure.
Many workers took asbestos home with them. They were greeted with hugs from children, spouses or other family members at the end of the workday. This direct and close contact transferred asbestos fibers from workers to loved ones.
Wives often shook out their husband’s clothes before washing them. The clothes these people wore to work was laden with asbestos dust. This, of course sent fibers flying, exposing the women to secondary contamination.
Because safety precautions have been available for many years, companies can be held liable if you or your family members develop secondary exposure asbestosis or mesothelioma, even when none of you are an employee.
OSHA-the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has safety standard requirements in place and companies who don’t adhere to these, or don’t respond to other known hazards and safety practices, can be sued for medical costs and compensation.
