Cancer diagnoses in the United States are on the decline for the first time ever. This is a significant milestone and a turning point in our national battle with this disease, according to the American Cancer Society.
Though deaths from cancer have been going down since the early 1990s, this is the first time that the annual report produced by the American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries has also shown a decrease in overall diagnoses. This is largely due to drops in the leading forms of cancer: lung, prostate, colorectal and breast.
However, researchers warn that the figures may be misleading since there it is possible (especially in the case of breast and prostate cancer) that there are simply fewer people being screened. Also, some of this decline can be attributed to the decrease in smoking that started in the 1980s.
