Vitamin C may affect Meso and other cancer treatments

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

If you are taking chemotherapy to treat your cancer, perhaps you should lay off those vitamin C tablets.

The antioxidant vitamin C is a class of molecule that is known to help prevent cancer by removing oxygen-free radicals from the body, but researchers in the United States have recently found that taking vitamin C supplements while receiving chemotherapy may reduce the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs.

The study was carried out by Dr Mark Heaney and colleagues of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and was recently published in Cancer Research. In the study, the researchers took human cancer cells and grew them in vitro with vitamin C, and chemotherapy drugs were added to see if they had effects on the vitamin C. The study found that with the addition of vitamin C, chemotherapy drugs killed between 30 and 70 percent fewer cancer cells than when vitamin C was not added. The researchers implanted mice with human cancer cells and gave the mice vitamin C before giving them chemotherapy treatments. The tumors grew at a more rapid pace in the mice given the vitamin C.

The Combination

The chemotherapy drugs used in the experiments were Cisplatin, doxorubicin, methotrexate, vincristine, and gleevec. In response to the results, Dr Mark Heaney said, “The vitamin C didn’t neutralize the effects of the chemotherapy drugs, but it blunted their effects. Vitamin C is something everyone needs to have in their diet or you can develop scurvy. But I don’t recommend taking supplemental vitamin C during that period of time that my patients are receiving chemotherapy.”

Recently, Circuit Judge Daniel Slack was been asked by Maytag and Whirlpool to dismiss an asbestos suit filed by the estate of an Illinois man who died from mesothelioma. Maytag and Whirlpool argue that the plaintiff doesn’t adequately identify the products exposed to, the dates of exposure, the location of exposure, and the time frame the products were supplied. They also argue the case should be dismissed because the plaintiff fails to plead sufficient facts in order to appraise them of the frequency and proximity with the plaintiff is alleged to have been exposed to asbestos from their respective products.

The estate of the deceased filed suit on August 15, claiming his disease was wrongfully caused. He was employed from 1954 to 2004 as a mechanic, washer and dryer maintenance man, and commercial window installer at various locations throughout Illinois.

During the course of his employment and through repairs to his home and vehicles, his estate claims he was exposed to and inhaled, ingested, or otherwise absorbed asbestos fibers. In addition to Maytag and Whirlpool, Boeing, Chrysler, C.P. Hall, Ford Motor Company, General Electric, General Motors, Goodyear, Hawker Beechcraft, Ingersoll-Rand, International Paper, John Crane, McDonnell Douglas, MetLife, Philips Electronics, Pratt & Whitney and Rolls Royce are named as defendants. The estate is seeking damages in excess of $250,000.

Lawsuit against BNSF alleges asbestos exposure

An Illinois couple has recently filed a lawsuit claiming they have both developed asbestos-related diseases as a result of exposure while the husband worked for a major railroad.

Living & Dying movie full

The couple claim that because of the husband’s asbestos exposure, he has been diagnosed with mesothelioma and she with asbestosis. Both diseases are caused by exposure to asbestos.

The husband worked for BNSF Railway between 1971 and 1999 as a brakeman, switchman, and conductor. It is during this time that he believes the asbestos exposure occurred. His wife cliams she was exposed to asbestos in the home while she would wash her husband’s clothing after he arrived home from work.

The couple believes BNSG was negligent in allowing the exposure to occur, failed to provide a safe place to work, failed to provide protective equipment, and failed to warn employees about the dangers of working around asbestos and other toxic substances.

Asbestos fibers are extremely hazardous when they become airborne. If inhaled, these tiny fibers are highly irritating to the soft, delicate tissue of the lungs. Beyond asbestosis, other diseases that can result from asbestos exposure include lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of mesothelioma cancer. This disease, like other asbestos-related diseases, can take several decades to develop symptoms. As a result, most cases are diagnosed during the advanced stages.

Individuals who suffer from mesothelioma cancer or asbestosis should contact an experienced mesothelioma attorney to receive a legal consultation on the possibility of developing a personalized  mesothelioma lawsuit. Because the cancer is fatal and no completely effective mesothelioma treatment exists to reduce the disease it may be important to develop litigation and potentially receive monetary compensation to pay for costly medical bills.

Carbon nanotubes may affect humans like asbestos

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

While carbon nanotubes are being used more and more in the chemistry and electronics industries, a study published by the Nature Nanotechnology Journal has found that these nanotubes may cause the human body the same harm as asbestos.

These artificially created molecules are currently in use in many products, including tennis rackets, baseball bats, and bicycle handlebars. Because companies are not required to disclose the information, consumers are unable to know the exact use and amounts of the nanotubes.

Researchers noted that nanotube fibers are very similar to asbestos fibers, and studied their effects on bodies of mice. Asbestos, varying lengths of carbon nanotubes, and normal flat carbon sheets were injected into the abdomens of mice. These researchers found that long carbon nanotubes cause inflammation and scarring in the lining of the lungs and stomach—an effect of exposure to asbestos.

Those in manufacturing plants may not be the only ones at risk; people who demolish the products, throw the products into landfill sites, or incinerate the products may be subject to carbon nanotube exposure.
