Cholesterol Drug Treats Cancer, Too

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

A common cholesterol drug may be the next breakthrough in advanced cancer treatment. The drug, called Lovastatin, was the first of the statin group of lipid fighters and was introduced in 1980. In lab tests, Lovastatin had an unexpected yet exciting side effect—it attacked cancer cells as well as lipids.

In order for Lovastatin to be effective against cancer tumors, the drug must be administered in doses too high for most patients to handle. Now scientists have found that a similar outcome can be achieved by combining safe doses of Lovastatin with other drugs like interferon.

The results so far have been encouraging. Several patients with late stage melanoma (an extremely fatal form of skin cancer) have seen tumors regress or disappear in a matter of weeks. In fact, the first patient to receive this experimental treatment had stage 4 melanoma that completely disappeared to leave him cancer-free to this day.

It may also be effective against several osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Unfortunately, they do not expect this treatment to be effective against tumors in the brain.

Of all the common side effects of chemotherapy, most patients undergoing the Levastatin treatment only experience fatigue.

New York man wins $16 million mesothelioma lawsuit

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Seventy-one year-old mesothelioma sufferer, Marvin Penn, has been granted $16.25 million by a New York jury. With help from his asbestos attorney, Penn is the first plaintiff to successfully prosecute a dental tape manufacturer in an asbestos exposure claim.

Penn’s lawsuit was against Kerr Corp, whom he claimed manufactured asbestos-laden dental tape that released harmful asbestos fibers into the air when he used it to create dental casings. The lawyers representing Kerr argued that the tape did not release asbestos dust during use and even if it did, Kerr had no way of knowing that it would be harmful.

Fortunately for Penn, the jury found Kerr Corp 20 percent responsible for his mesothelioma. They found another dental supply company (Dentsply, who settled with Penn before the verdict) and Todd Shipyards (where Penn’s father was employed) each 20 percent responsible as well. The remaining 40 percent was attributed to Penn’s exposure to a spray-on asbestos coating used on the World Trade Center while he worked at the adjacent post office.

This was a very surprising verdict and award amount. Asbestos litigation has gotten very intricate and difficult to prosecute in some places—and on top of that, asbestos exposure through dental tape has till now been uncharted waters. This could open the doors for similar cases all around the country.

This case highlights why it’s important for individuals who suffer from mesothelioma cancer should contact an experienced mesothelioma attorney for professional insight.

One of every 125 men over age 50 will die from an asbestos-related illness. In fact, government researchers say nearly 30 people die every day from diseases like asbestosis and mesothelioma, diseases caused by asbestos exposure.

Yet, it’s used is many everyday products from children’s toys to brake liners.

In other words, despite the fact that there is no safe level of exposure, despite the fact that asbestos is a known carcinogen, despite the fact that even a brief exposure to asbestos can result in a debilitating illness 30 or 40 years later in life, it is not banned in the United States.

Congress is considering legislation — finally — that will do just that.

Please, go to www.banasbestos.us and sign the petition to urge Congress to ban this toxic substance and prevent the deaths of thousands more people.
