Recent Study Indicates Chemo Treatment May Help Mesothelioma Patients
Saturday, June 21st, 2008According to a study published in a May edition of Lung Cancer, a second course of chemotherapy may help those who have already undergone chemotherapy treatments for mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a rare form of lung cancer that is very difficult to treat that develops as a result of asbestos exposure. It spreads quickly throughout the body and is most often fatal.
The typical treatment of mesothelioma includes chemotherapy with a combination of pemetrexed and cispaltin. Very often, the first-line of treatment does not work and there is not much research into the effectiveness of second-line treatments.
Dr. Stebbing and his colleagues have begun to test the effectiveness of Vinorelbine as a second-line treatment. It is currently being used as a first-line treatment as well. According to Dr. Stebbing’s study, 10% of patients experienced a partial response. The disease stopped developing, but did not respond in 68% of patients.
Dr. Stebbing advises that further research needs to be conducted and that Vinorelbine is not an appropriate treatment for all mesothelioma patients.
Mesothelioma cancer attorneys are working to help those who have developed the disease through asbestos exposure.
