Virgin Islands Contractor Gets a Three Year Prison Sentence for Illegal Asbestos Removal
According to FOX Business News, the owner of Virgin Islands Asbestos Removal, Co., Cleve Allen George, was sentenced to 33 months in prison for false statements in regards to the demolition of a low-income housing neighborhood and multiple violations of the Clean Air Act. The sentencing occurred on February 26, 2008.
After a two-week trial in June of 2005, George and his co-defendant, Dylan C. Starnes, were convicted of 15 counts involving false statements to federal agencies and the illegal removal of asbestos at the Donoe Housing Community Project in 2001.
In addition to 33 months in prison, George was also sentenced to three years of supervised released and is required to pay for X-rays of workers exposed to asbestos.
George’s co-defendant, Starnes, was given the same sentence in July of 2007.
Both men were licensed and educated in proper asbestos removal. They were convicted and sentenced based on their negligence to act in accordance with safety regulations.
Asbestos exposure can lead to serious and fatal illnesses of the respiratory tract, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. The acts of the two men effectively put the workers and the surrounding public at risk of asbestos exposure.
