Doctors Claiming To Be Pediatricians Are Not Always Board Certified In Pediatrics

Be an informed consumer.  Ask your doctor questions about his/her medical school, residency, as well as the number of medical facilities he/she has privileges at, and where those hospitals are located.

A study of pediatrician records recently found that up to 17% of physicians practicing pediatrics have never been certified by the pediatrics board.  Some of those claiming to be pediatricians have not even completed a medical residency in pediatrics.  The study was released in June by the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital’s Health Evaluation and Research Unit compared eight states’ lists of licensed doctors designating themselves as pediatricians to the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP’s) list of board certified pediatricians.
