“How Many More Americans Have To Die Before Our Government Does The Right Thing And Bans Asbestos?” -Senator Murray

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

DO YOU LIKE TO BREATHE?  GOT BREATHING?

THIS IS THE BILL, AND WE ALL NEED TO SUPPORT IT, Senator Patty Murray’s bill, S.742, The Ban Asbestos in America Act of 2007.

On June 12, 2007, the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW) heard testimony about the health effects of asbestos.  Senator Barbara Boxer, the panel’s chairwoman, confirmed that in 2005, 2,530 metric tons of asbestos and 90,000 metric tons of asbestos-containing cement products, gaskets, brakes and clutch parts were imported into the U.S.

Furthermore, she added: “Worldwide production of asbestos actually increased in 2005, from 2.36 million metric tons in 2004 to 2.4 million metric tons in 2005.”

Senator Boxer concluded that in the face of the “terrible price” paid by ordinary Americans for the use of this toxic substance and in light of the availability of safer non-asbestos alternatives, the use of asbestos in the U.S. should be discontinued.

Senator Murray described the six year fight to get her bill enacted and asked: “How many more Americans have to die before our government finally does the right thing and bans asbestos?

Senator Murray summed up the facts as follows:

  • asbestos is deadly, (IT CAUSES ASBESTOSIS, ASBESTOS-RELATED CANCER(S), AND/OR MESOTHELIOMA,

  • it’s devastating families and communities,

  • and every day that we wait to ban it, we’re sentencing more Americans to an early and avoidable death.

  •

    • WAKE UP, WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!

EPA Proposals Undermine The Clean Air Act As Well As The United States Supreme Court

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently issued proposed rules that thwart the Clean Air Act as well as United States Supreme Court opinions.  The proposed rules would permit coal-fired power plants to increase emissions, by exempting them from the Clean Air Act’s key provisions!

I guess for the profits made by big business, even the EPA can be bought.  It’s so nice to be able to tell our children, and here we have, another federal agency violating federal law…

And, no matter what you have heard, coal-fired power IS NOT clean.  If it were, why spend all this time, effort, and money getting around the law?

To add insult to injury, the current administration rushes to reward coal-fired power plant lawbreakers with tax cuts, and even bends the law to fit these lawbreakers’ corporate purpose.  The end result is that big business is making its law the law of the land for all of us.

Mesothelioma

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Mesothelioma is caused by the inhalation of asbestos fibers, and those who are diagnosed with mesothelioma often worked with the deadly mineral, which is widely used as an insulation and fireproofing material.  The disease has a latency period which means that disease tends to occur in the victim about thirty (30) years after the victim’s exposure, although the latency period can vary from 10 to 50 years.

Actor Steve McQueen died from Mesothelioma in 1980, and Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Warren Zevon died from Mesothelioma in 2003.

Many Mesothelioma deaths are never diagnosed correctly, with the victim succumbing to pneumonia-like symptoms and no autopsy being performed.
